Outdoor Emergency Care

The National Ski Patrol (NSP) Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) course provides the basis of medical education for all patrollers at Red Lodge Mountain and are certified OEC Technicians who must maintain annual certification. OEC Technicians follow the current OEC textbook (6th Edition) for medical direction.

The OEC course is conducted online as well as in the classroom. The online portion begins in April and students have required readings covering the OEC textbook and weekly review tests. The online portion culminates in a 100-question multiple-choice written examination in August with a required passing score of 80%.

Following successful completion of the written exam, students will begin the classroom practical skills portion of training in September. Students will learn skills and the use of equipment to treat ill and injured patients in a variety of scenarios. The classroom portion will culminate in November with a practical skills examination.

The OEC course is taught by patrol members, some of whom are professional healthcare providers. Candidates, regardless of background or profession, must dedicate significant time and effort to complete this challenging course.
